ArtWorks! Summer Workshops for Kids: July 23-27
ArtWorks! will initiate an exciting program of arts enrichment workshops for children this summer. These workshops will begin on Monday, July 23rd and will run for approximately one and one half hours every day from Monday through Friday. Four workshops are planned. Their content is varied and there will be something for kids of every age. The Workshop Committee is looking for volunteers for the Artsmart workshop. A volunteer's child would be able to attend a workshop for free. Contact Pat Smart at smart.art@comcast.net if you would like to help.
Registration must be paid in full at least one week prior to the workshop start date of July 23rd.

CREATIVE MOVEMENT, Ages 4 - 8 *** This class is full ***

Instructor: Jackie Abbott
Creative Movement, led by Jackie Abbott, is an enjoyable way for young children to develop physical skills, channel their energy, stimulate their imagination and promote creativity. Jackie will choose a "theme of the day" and the children will be given opportunities to explore and discover different aspects of movement based on this theme. She will also provide a theme-based story and a related craft project.
Jackie Abbott is the artistic director of The School of Creative Arts at Sand Lake Center for the Arts. She teaches ballet and creative movement throughout the area at local schools, dance studios, libraries, and museums. She has degrees in elementary education, special education and creative arts with a concentration in dance.

MOUNTAIN DULCIMER, Ages 9 - 12

Instructor: CarolLynn Langley
CarolLynn Langley will provide a unique opportunity to build a Mountain Dulcimer from a kit, learn the history of the instrument and the basics of playing, and bring home lots of easy music to enjoy. All materials are provided and no previous musical experience is necessary. These durable, sweet sounding instruments are made from heavy corrugated cardboard with wooden fret boards, geared tuning pegs, and steel strings.
CarolLynn Langley enjoys teaching people of all ages about this uniquely American instrument, the mountain dulcimer, in workshops, at festivals, and privately. She performs regularly with her husband, Gene. They have recorded a CD, Speak a Little Louder, Please.

ARTSMART, Ages 6 - 9

Instructor: Pat Smart
Pat Smart will lead a program of three simultaneous creative arts activities - Batik, printmaking and collage. In Batik, fabric is waxed and dyed in successive layers. Some printmaking activities include: finger painting on plexiglass plates, etching with pencil on "foamies", printing with sponges, corks or vegetables, colograph with glue, cardboard shapes, string, etc. Collage activities may include various tissue collage and other techniques.
Pat has been a resident of West Sand Lake and Averill Park for the past thirty years. She taught in the Averill Park school district for twenty years before retiring early to pursue an Art career. She has been teaching Artsmart through the Poestenkill PTO since 1998.

ACTING AND IMPROVISATION, Ages 12-18

Instructors: Nan Mullenneaux
This week long workshop, led by Nan Mullenneaux, will teach both basic acting and improvisation skills to middle and high-school aged students, exploring professional techniques in character development, comedy versus drama, memorization tricks, and finding emotional truth onstage. We will then take these skills and use them in scenes from Broadway plays and movie scripts. Our final class will be an open rehearsal for family and friends. The emphasis will be on fun, trust, and teamwork. There are no stars, says Nan, just great actors!
Nan Mulleneaux has acted in regional, off-Broadway, dinner and summer stock theaters as well as film, television, and radio. Over the past twenty years Nan has developed highly successful acting classes for colleges, after-school programs, theater companies, and arts centers.
