2012 Summer Youth Programs: July 9 - August 5
If you would like to register for one or more of our workshops, please print the registration form or register on-line and return it with your check made payable to SLCA-CTP to PO Box 179, Averill Park, NY 12018. We must receive your registration form and full payment two weeks prior to workshops beginning. Register early as spaces are limited and class may be canceled if registrations are low. In this event you may transfer to another workshop if space permits or request that your money be refunded. A full refund will be available if you withdraw at least two weeks prior to the start of your workshop. No refund will be available if you withdraw after this time.

Youth Theatre Players (July 9 - August 5)

YOUTH THEATRE PLAYERS present . . . TO ART AND BEYOND

Grades 3-8
Tuition: $75 for 4 week session
Rehearsals: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 6:30-8:00pm
Performance Dates: August 4 at 7pm & August 5 at 2:30pm
A trip to an art museum becomes much more than some students expected. What really happens when you "relate" to art? Between fear and amazement, the students experience art on a very personal level. This class is for enthusiastic youth interested in acting & being involved with a full theater production.

Sue Frost and Val Kavanaugh will teach acting skills, direct and produce the show. They're looking forward to working with enthusiastic young actors on this project.
Week 1 (July 9-13)

CREATIVE MOVEMENT with Jackie Abbott
Monday-Friday, 9 - 10:30am
Grades K-2

Creative Movement
This class is an enjoyable way for young children to develop physical skills, channel their energy, stimulate their imagination and promote creativity. Jackie will choose a “theme of the day” and the children will be given opportunities to explore and discover different aspects of movement based on this theme.

Jackie Abbott is the artistic director of The School of Creative Arts at Sand Lake Center for the Arts. She teaches ballet and creative movement throughout the area at local schools, dance studios, libraries, and museums. Jackie Abbott has degrees in Elementary Education, Special Education and The Creative Arts with a concentration in dance. She teaches dance and the creative arts at local schools, dance studios, museums, and libraries. She is the artistic director of The School of Creative Arts at The Sand Lake Center for the Arts in Averill Park, NY.

FILMMAKING (July 16-27)

FROM SCRIPT TO SCREEN with Jim Powers
Monday-Friday, 9am - 12pm

Filmmaking
An all-inclusive, start to finish, hands on film making course. By the end of the class each member will have worked on every aspect of the filmmaking process. From "The Pitch" to screenwriting, acting, filming, sound tech, producing, directing, editing and post production. Taught by multi-award winning filmmakers Jim and Steve Powers, this immersive class is for anyone who is interested in the art of filmmaking and is ready for the exciting and busy world of making movies from script to screen. Students will receive a DVD to take home.

Jim Powers, a student at St. Lawerence University won Best Student Feature for the film "Killing Saul" a comedy. He has directed and produced a civil war film called "Reaping Men" which will be premiering this spring, along with a 1950s college comedy called "Baker's Dozen".
Week 2 (July 16-20)

GRAPHIC NOVEL ILLUSTRATION with Phil Singer <

Graphic Novel Illustration
We will begin by developing a story which we will build into a graphic novel. Each student will rough out 2 pages: characters and layout. Then, collaboratively, we will make decisions about characters and layout of the graphic novel as a whole. During the final 2 classes students will layout, pencil, and finally ink 2 pages of the graphic short story (including lettering, page design, and finished art).

Phil Singer makes his living as a Caricaturist and Illustrator in the upstate New York area. He also sculpts in sand and snow and is the FX artist for the Great Escapes Fright Fest. Phil is a graduate of the Joe Kubert School of Graphic Arts in Dover NJ and is a published illustrator. To see some of his work check out his website at www.philsingerart.com

CHARACTER CREATION & COMICS with Phil Singer

Graphic Novel Illustration
Students will begin by creating characters and developing story concepts. We will use rough sketches and humorous story telling to flesh out the characters’ personalities. Students will develop single panel gag cartoons as well as 3 to 4 panel daily comic strips in black and white line art.

PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM with Stephanie Manuel

This is a recorder class for those who enjoy playing! We will get right down to business, learning and even composing our own songs to perform in a concert for friends on Friday. We will explore different types of recorders and their history. Together we will make some beautiful music! Previous recorder experience is helpful–let’s play! Use your recorder or buy one for $5.

Betcha didn't know that I am an extraordinarily talented Music teacher as well! I cannot wait to meet your children, and have a blast dancing singing and playing away at SLCA camp this summer! We Got the Beat
This is the class for those younger friends who need to feel the rhythm! We will play with bean bags, rhythm sticks, scarves, shakers and other fun instruments, while movin’ and groovin’ to the music! Through the music we will develop coordination, listening, and direction following.
Week 3 (July 23-27)

SWEET CERAMICS with Dana Werntz

Take home a dessert that will last forever
Sweet Ceramics
Come and learn about two very fun topics - art and dessert! In this course students will learn about artists who used food (mostly desserts) as their inspiration for making art. Then they will make a favorite treat of their own out of clay! They will learn how to build and assemble basic shapes with the clay and then decorate them.

Dana Sela received her Bachelors in Fine Art from SUNY Purchase and her Masters in Art Education from the College of Saint Rose. She has exhibited and sold her art throughout New York and New Jersey. Dana has a passion for teaching and loves working creatively with students of all ages. She has taught a wide variety of private art courses in the Albany area. Dana feels that each one of us has the ability to make something wonderfully unique if given the right tools and encouragement.

LET’S DRAW FROM LIFE! with Dana Werntz

Let's Draw from Life
A still life drawing class is something for everyone to try! In this class you will look at some of the greatest still life artists of all time and learn fun, easy techniques for making your own drawings look more realistic and come to life. Everyone has his/her own unique style of drawing and way of viewing.

POP BLOCK ART! with Dana Werntz
Monday-Friday, 2:30 - 3:30pm
Grades 9-12

Pop Block Art!
Clothing logos, band posters, magazine ads…everywhere you look you can find bold, colorful printed images from the world of Pop Art. In this class you will learn one of the many printmaking techniques used to make these graphic designs. Each student will create a linoleum block of his/her own design. You will experiment with different colors and make multiple prints of your block.
Week 4 (July 30 - August 3)

ARTSMART with Pat Smart
Monday-Friday, 9 - 11am
Grades 4-7

ArtSmart
Students will use their creative imagination and explore the world of fabric art with batik and learn the magic of sun printing and printmaking activities such as monoprinting and etching. Small groups provide valuable individual attention and there is always time to pursue individual interests.

Pat has been a resident of West Sand Lake and Averill Park for the past thirty years. She taught in the Averill Park school district for twenty years before retiring early to pursue an Art career. She began her art education at local colleges; studying drawing, painting, printmaking, art history, papermaking, and ceramics. She continues her studies through workshops in monoprinting, batik (which she began in the 70's), drawing, and watercolor. She has been teaching ArtSmart through the Poestenkill PTO since 1998.

CREATIVE CLAY with Jami Gras     
Monday-Friday, 1 - 3pm
Grades 4-7
Tuition: $70/Week

Creative Clay
Students will be encouraged to experiment and use their imagination to have fun with a variety of activities which include: Pinch Pots, Masks, Carving, and Hand Building. Students work will be kiln fired throughout the week & the last work will be available for pick up one week after the last class.

Jami Gras is a well-known local artist with many years experience in creating sculptural art. Jami works at his home studio and does contemporary, clay sculptures and shows his work at galleries throughout the region.
